OpenAI GPT-7 LEAK: “BEL” 10T Parameter the Next Massive Leap

An internal codename: “Bel.” And potentially the foundation for an AGI-threshold model. There’s just one problem: none of it has been confirmed. The entire “Bel” story traces back to a single anonymous account, @synthwavedd, which claimed on August 25, 2026 that OpenAI had finished pretraining a massive model positioned beyond its current generation. The rumor quickly spread across tech Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and international tech press — despite the original source openly describing the information as rumor and speculation. Meanwhile, the model that actually exists, GPT-6 Astra, is already doing things that would have sounded extreme a generation ago. Astra reportedly has a 1.05 million-token context window, supports outputs up to 128,000 tokens, and reaches 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 with chain-of-thought reasoning enabled. Its OSWorld performance jumped to 72.6%, and on one cybersecurity exploit benchmark it went from solving 42.4% of challenges to 100% when time limits were removed. But those numbers hide some important limitations. Long-horizon autonomy remains a major problem. Hallucinations have been reduced, not eliminated. Agents can lose track of earlier decisions, make planning errors, and still require humans inside the loop for extended tasks. And Astra’s reported decline in “monitorability” raises an even more complicated question: what happens when increasingly autonomous AI systems become harder to observe while they reason? That’s where the idea of a true GPT-7-level leap becomes much more interesting than a parameter count. A genuinely new generation would need to move beyond being a powerful chatbot with tools. Persistent memory, reliable multi-day planning, broader multimodality, end-to-end digital work, and potentially AI systems capable of contributing meaningfully to AI research itself would represent a much bigger shift. OpenAI has publicly discussed that last frontier. The company says an automated research intern is already assisting its scientists, while fully automated AI researchers have been discussed as a target for 2028. Then there’s the money. OpenAI’s Stargate initiative involves a planned $500 billion infrastructure buildout targeting roughly 10 gigawatts of AI data-center capacity in the US. Add major NVIDIA and AMD compute agreements, enormous funding commitments, and reported cloud spending, and the infrastructure being assembled for future AI systems is arguably more interesting than the “Bel” rumor itself. The competitive pressure is also intensifying. Anthropic, Google DeepMind, xAI, and Chinese AI labs including Alibaba and Baidu are all pushing different approaches to frontier models, multimodality, agents, reasoning, and massive-scale compute. So could OpenAI eventually train something on the scale being attributed to “Bel”? The infrastructure makes increasingly large systems plausible. But that doesn’t make the leak real. Because the biggest story may not be an alleged 10-trillion-parameter model at all.
