The hype suggests quantum processing units (QPUs) will simply replace GPUs for training massive AI models, but the truth is far more complicated. Training a model like Meta's 405B parameter Llama 3.1 would take one GPU over 4,400 years. But we already solved this: parallel computing with 16,000 GPUs knocks that down to just 3 months. This method already works incredibly well. So where do quantum computers fit in? The jump from a deterministic GPU (using 0s and 1s) to a probabilistic QPU (using qubits that are 0 and 1 simultaneously) isn't a simple upgrade. It creates a massive "Encoding Problem" : How do you feed deterministic data into a probabilistic system without defeating the whole purpose of quantum computing?
