We’ve all had that moment where keys disappear—Tile helped solve it with a small Bluetooth tracker back in 2013. You attach it to keys/bags/wallets and you can ring it when you’re within about 100–150 ft.
Tile’s best trick was crowdsourced finding: if someone else with the Tile app walks past your lost tracker, their phone can anonymously relay its location back to you.
Then Apple released AirTag in April 2021. The huge difference? Find My. AirTags broadcast a secure Bluetooth signal, and nearby iPhones/iPads/Macs can detect it and send an encrypted location to iCloud—so you can see it in Find My even when you’re nowhere near it.
In this video, I explain how Find My works behind the scenes and why Apple basically built the biggest lost-item network on earth.
